Gussie's Rescue Dog Breed Reveal

Updated: Jan 26

Gussie breed reveal had to be virtual since it was in 2020....that was a bummer since we got to have a huge party for Porter, but I still had fun thinking up the idea!

Continue reading to find out what materials you need to re-create Gussie's reveal.

Step 1: Doggy DNA Test

To start, you need to get yourself a doggy DNA test. We used Embark for Porter and Gussie and it was easy enough: you order the kit, swab the dog's mouth, and mail it back to the company. A few weeks later, the results are emailed to you.

Are the results accurate? I have no idea. Is it fun to pretend, anyway? Absolutely.

Step 2: Order Materials

Once we got Gussie's results, we realized we would need a way to reveal quite a few breeds. I settled on a "Jack-in-the-Box" situation where dog-themed balloons with Gussie's breed would pop out of a box.

I ordered the following materials:

  • Cute letter board thing to announce the reveal.

Cute letter board for announcements.
Cute letter board that I ended up using all the time.
  • Large wardrobe boxes. These were nice and tall and allowed me to stuff a couple of balloons inside.

  • Pretty wrapping paper to cover up the ugly wardrobe boxes.

Wrapping paper with flowers on it.
Pretty wrapping papers....endless options!

  • Balloons!!!!!!!!! I decided to go for a mix between bone shapes and dog shapes. The bone balloons floated easily but the dog balloons did not. This is why they ended up placed at the bottom of the boxes in the photo, but I still thought they were cute.

  • Helium for the damn balloons. I bought this helium tank a while back for an anniversary party and was so mad that I had to spend a bunch of money on air, but I didn't regret it once I got all the balloons filled and the house looked happy and festive... and then I still had a bunch left over to fill up Gussie's breed reveal balloons.

  • Permanent Markers

Sharpie markers for labeling the balloons

  • Bungee Cords

Step 3: Put It All Together

Use the wrapping paper to cover the boxes. Once that is set, use the permanent marker to put the names of the different breeds on the balloons. (It was way easier to do this BEFORE the balloons were inflated.)

Blow up the balloons and tape them the strings to the inside of the box so that they do not blow away when you open the boxes. They are going to want to escape immediately from the box, so use a bungee cord to hold them in until you are ready for them to pop up.

Place the boxes in a pretty spot, arrange the non-moving dog balloons along the bottom, try and get your dog to line up with the boxes, unlock the bungee cords and wallla! Breed revealed!

Would love to see what the actual creative people in the world to for their breed reveals, so please share in the comments below!!
